Describing this novel is a little bit harder for me to do on this one, and believe me, if I could type it all out for you, I would. So I’m going to try.
The Serpent King is about three friends, three different walks of life, who somehow formed a friendship- a bond. Dill, Lydia, and Travis, do basically everything together. Attached at the hip. Dill does not have the best reputation in their hometown of Forrestville, Tennessee. His father is in prison for have some illegal things on his laptop- which is something Dill’s mother says is his fault, not his father’s. His father is also known for being a local signs pastor in the town. Lydia has been raised by her parents and has always been successful in her endeavors. Finally, Travis. A bookworm who is obsessed with a mythical book series that he just can’t get enough of.
These three best friends are going in to their senior year of high school. Now is their time to figure out what they are going to do after the year ends. Lydia wants to go to NYU, become a well-known writer. As for Travis and Dill, it’s to be stuck in Forrestville. Things finally look to be taking a turn in the right direction for these teens, until tragedy strikes, leaving questions left unanswered for their futures.
I can’t even begin to tell you how great I thought this book was! It was recommended to me by one of my friends. She had said that she read it and bawled. I can see why!
Jeff Zentner did a fantastic job writing this one.
