One of my favorite classic films from 1959, Some Like It Hot, arrived in theaters again this week. I have seen this film multiple times on TCM (Turner Classic Movies), and I am so, so excited to see it on the big screen.
Two musicians witness an act done by the mob. They flee the state and join an all-female band disguised as women, but things only get crazier. Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are the leading male roles, alongside the popular Marilyn Monroe.
In 1960, the film won Best Picture- Comedy, Marilyn Monroe won Best Actress- Comedy or Musical, and Jack Lemmon won Best Actor- Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes. Best Costume Design – Black-and-White for the film won an Oscar.
Lately, I have been really in to the older films, which were released in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Why? I guess I just feel that there is more individuality in the films from the past, compared to what is normally put in theaters now. Not saying that there aren’t good films coming out.
You may notice Marilyn Monroe from films like, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Seven Year Itch, and The Misfits. Jack Lemmon is known for his comedic expertise, like in Grumpy Old Men and The Odd Couple. Lastly, Tony Curtis is popularly known for The Defiant Ones, The Great Race, and Sweet Smell of Success.
Is Some Like It Hot worth the visit to the theater? Yes!
My rating BEFORE seeing it on the big screen: 5/5
